His Dark Materials

In this trilogy written by Phillip Pullman, the heroine Lyra and her daemon are on a mission to kill god. She befriends renegade angels, pirates, witches, shamans and armored bears. They liberate their friends and then set the Church's prisons on fire, they kill soldiers along with morals.

This book was surprisingly epic, anyone else read it?

I have yet to read his dark materials, though it is next on my list once I get a copy. I read the first two and they were great. I am looking forward do the third assuming it is going to continue to intensify its attack on the church, along with other institutions of authority. What a great mission though. To kill god.

i read the books and enjoyed them but i didn't really get why everyone thought that they were super intense or imbued with any heavy meaning...beyond the obvious. they were good but didn't blow my mindtank.

Of course, I don't think they were meant to blow anyone's "mindtank", they were just an enjoyable read. I thought it would be nice to talk about the books and maybe encourage others to read some good fiction in these cold winter months.
